A jail fire started by an inmate sent one deputy to the hospital and endangered others.
A probable cause statement from the Pettis County Sheriff's Office revealed that the fire broke out around 9 p.m. on Nov. 16 in F Pod.
When deputies opened [name]'s cell door, they said smoke poured into the hallway. [Name] immediately attacked them and forced them to tase him twice.
During the struggle, deputies and jail staff indicated that they inhaled dangerous amounts of smoke. One deputy was even sent to a nearby hospital as a result.
Investigators found [name] had broken apart several e-cigarettes to expose batteries and wiring. He used those to create an ignition.
Law enforcement officials noted that [name] lit tissue paper on fire, then used jail-issued blankets and linens to accelerate the blaze.
It remains unclear how [name] obtained the e-cigarettes or how long he had been planning the fire.
