August 16, 2024

Vandalism to a main Optimum fiber line Friday impacted internet service between several county school systems and the state Department of Education.

According to the state department, the fiber cut impacted school systems in Greenbrier, Jackson, Mercer, Monroe, Pleasants, Raleigh and Wirt counties which are Optimum customers.

The vandalism also interrupted the first day of school in Kanawha County for a few hours Friday. The school system was unable to access Schoology, Clever, Workflow and Employee Portal.

Optimum was able to reroute Kanawha County Schools service around the fiber outage. Service was restored by 11:30 a.m.

There's no word from Optimum on how long it will take to repair the break.
