Violent messages were spray painted on a building in Chapel Hill.
This graffiti turned up on the old post office building after a pro-Palestinian protest Saturday evening.
That graffiti reads "death to cops," "burn the prisons" and "jihad now."
Orange County District Attorney Jeff Nieman called the vandalism "despicable."
Chapel Hill town employees tried cleaning it up, but the words were still visible Monday. The town is having to turn to contractors for a deep clean as police search for those responsible.
The news comes at the start of a new school year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, but a familiar fight is still leaving a mark.
Nieman said the graffiti is especially galling as it popped up while officers were escorting protesters down Franklin Street.
"I was floored, I was shocked, and I was upset," Nieman told WRAL News. "This is completely beyond the pale, beyond the line of any political discourse."
The graffiti appeared after a pro-Palestinian protest staged by several groups, including Triangle Stop Cop City.
A post from the group on Instagram said the event is "For all those who desire an end to this world of genocide" with the group vowing "No vote will end the violence of police and prisons, of borders and settler colonialism."
